Layout Bookmarklets

Use these bookmarklets to change the appearance of web pages.

To use a bookmarklet, simply click the link (or, if you use Explorer, drag it to another browser window).

To save the bookmarklet, add it to your favorites/bookmarks or drag the link to your desktop. If you use Explorer or Opera you can import all the bookmarklets in one easy operation.

Clear Ads
If you're tired of web pages filled with blinking banner ads and annoying Flash, then this is the bookmarklet for you. It removes all Flash content, and all banner ads provided they are in one of the standard formats (468*60, 125*125, etc.). Also, scrolling marquees are removed, all gif animation is stopped, and background music is killed.

Example: Try it out on this page.

Note: Due to the 508/488 limit the Explorer 6 version only kills 15 different banner ad formats. The version for other browsers kills 126 formats (the "extended version" called "Clear" at the bottom of this page will also clear 126, and it can be used with Explorer 6).

Clear IntelliTxt
Removes IntelliTxt, which is formatted text that displays an advertisement when you move the mouse over it. The concept of IntelliTxt is that specific keywords on the page get formatted as links that point to an advertiser. IntelliTxt exists for Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

Example: Try it out on this page (notice the underlined text in the main article).

For a permanent solution edit your hosts file so itxt.vibrantmedia.com points to 127.0.0.1. Then the script files containing the formatting code won't be loaded.

Clear Trails
Removes mouse trails - the annoying effect of text or graphics that follows your mouse around the page. There are numerous ways of implementing mouse trails, but I think this bookmarklet handles most of them (usually they occur on GeoCities pages). If you find examples to the contrary, please email the URLs to me.

Note: May cause Opera to crash.

Clear Layers
Removes all div, span, and layer elements that have absolute positioning (such as ads that obscure the page). Many pages have absolutely positioned elements that perform useful functions, though, like menus. These will be removed as well.

Example: Try it out on this page.

Allow Right-click
Some pages stupidly disallow right-clicks, usually in a vain attempt to prevent you from viewing the html source or copying the images. Use this bookmarklet to restore that ability. Also restores the ability to select text on the page.

Drop-down to List
Many pages require you to select from a drop-down list. This bookmarklet expands the drop-down box so you can see a list of up to 12 elements at the same time.

Bigger Text Areas
Sometimes textareas (multi-line textboxes) are just too small. This bookmarklet doubles the width and height of all textareas, effectively making them four times as big.

Example: Try it out on this page.

Resizable Frames
Sometimes you want to change the size of a frame, but you find it is impossible because the frame size is fixed. This bookmarklet makes the frames in a frameset resizable.

Note: Doesn't work with framesets containing other framesets.

Example: Try it out on this page.

Clear
This is a combination of several bookmarklets, specifically "Clear Ads", "Clear Geocities", "Clear IntelliTxt", "Clear Trails", and "Allow Right-click".

The Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera versions can be used straight away. However, due to the character limits in Internet Explorer the Explorer version is implemented in a special way. To make it work you need to save this file (right-click, choose Save Target As...): clearall.js.

If you save clearall.js to the folder c:\windows\web the bookmarklet will work straight away. If you prefer to save the file to another folder you must edit the bookmarklet accordingly (change the SCRIPTPATH variable). Due to cross-frame security issues the file must reside on your local machine; you can't reference it using http.
